Charles Lee Tice,
age 79, of St. Augustine, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007,
at Bayview-Samantha Wilson Care Center.
Mr. Tice was born
on Aug. 12, 1928, in Wadesboro, N.C.,
to Forrest and Dorothy Tice. After graduating from Rockingham High School, he
enrolled in High Point University, where he earned a bachelor of science degree
in history and science. While teaching at Winston-Salem Junior High School, he
attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and earned a master's
degree in education. He served as principal of Graper (N.C.) Elementary School
from 1953-55.
Mr. Tice moved to
Florida in 1955, initially working as a teacher. The following year, he joined
his parents in working at a small truck stop on U.S. 1. In 1965, the business
was moved to the junction of U.S. 1 and 1-95. Mr.
Tice's warmth and gregarious personality endeared him to the truckers, and he
quickly became known as "Charlie
T." A short time later the business itself was renamed to "Charlie T's Truck
Stop." During a typical 60-hour work week, Charlie T always made time to greet
the hundreds of regular patrons by name, tell a joke or two, and even get in a
few games of checkers with those willing to be pushed around by his prowess.
His quick smile and warm sense of humor
endeared him to all those he met. He owned and operated Charlie T's with
his wife, Rhea, until his retirement in 2001.
Throughout his life, Charlie attended
church regularly and volunteered for numerous ministries, including teaching
Sunday school, ushering and serving on various steering committees. His most
recent involvement was to serve as a Deacon on the Board of Trustees for
Presbyterian Memorial Church.
Charlie was
extremely proud to be a Mason for 52 years, having achieved perpetual
membership status. He was a member of the Shriners, and his allied orders were
S-1003 Scottish Rite based in Jacksonville,
Fla.
Although Charlie enjoyed a
variety of sports throughout his life, his main passion was golf. He loved the
game and was quite accomplished as a golfer. He had the unique distinction of
achieving five "holes-in-one" spread amongst the Deerwood, Matanzas Woods and
Ponce de Leon courses. Another highlight for Charlie was being paired with
golfing legend Arnold Palmer at the TPC Pro-Am, where he and Arnie both birdied
the #17 Island Green.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Rhea Tice;
daughters, Maureen (James) Dickenson, Sue (Tom) Wettaufer, and Jodi (Frank) de
la Torre; sons, Larry (Suzie) Tice, Steve (Debbie) Tice, and Mark (Jill) Tice;
grandchildren, Charles Tice II, Jake Tice, Katie (Adam) Pogachnik, Joshua and
Marie Dickenson, Jessica (Steve) Dugan, Jill (Joey) De Grande, Skyler, Landon,
and Sierra Tice, Nicholas
and Danielle de la Torre; great-grandchildren; Patrick and Brady Dugan,
Tyler and James Crookshank.
At his last birthday celebration, Charlie said that
his children and grandchildren were his greatest blessings.
In addition, he is survived by many relatives
in North Carolina.
Mr. Tice's family
will receive friends on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 11 a.m. at Craig Funeral Home. A
funeral service will be held at noon at Craig Funeral Home Chapel. Entombment
will be held at 2 p.m. at Arlington Memorial Cemetery.
